MRD raises awareness on Prostate Cancer
The Permanent Secretary of Lands and Mineral Resources Malakai Finau yesterday reminded staff of the Mineral Resources Department (MRD) in Nabua, on the importance of having regular check-ups for prostate cancer.
In celebrating Movember and remembering those who are suffering from prostate cancer, Mr Finau informed the staff that prostate cancer is now a killer disease in Australia.
“Prostate cancer is now one of the leading killer diseases in Australia and it is widely spreading to other parts of the world including Fiji. Like any other genetic disease, I encourage you all to have regular check-ups. Not only for prostate, but for any other cancerous related diseases,” Mr Finau said.
In elaborating the purpose of celebrating Movember at the MRD, the acting director Minerals, Raijeli Taga said the initiative started in Queensland Australia a few years back, where four men agreed to shave off their hair and moustache in remembrance of their loved ones who were suffering and have died from the disease.
Four male staff including PS Finau volunteered to grow their beards for over a month, until yesterday where they had to have it shaved off.
The MRD staff collected more than $200 which will go towards raising awareness on prostate cancer in Fiji.
