Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Honourable Ashneel Sudhakar commissioned three Groundwater Project on the 17th of September, 2019, including Dreka Settlement, Lekutu Government Station and Nakanacagi village.
Honourable Minister confirmed that the project cost of the 3 sites including GW exploration drilling / reticulation work / Solar installation cost $162,803.52 which benefited 342 people.
He said that these particular projects were conducted into two phases where groundwater drillings were carried out in 2016/2017 programme as the 1st phase and the reticulation work was conducted in 2017/2018 programme as final phase.
“Since the inception of this groundwater reticulation programme in 2015 by Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, more than 4000 people have directly benefitted,” he said.
He added that the project is formulated and facilitated by the Department to provide clean and safe water to the public and also to protect the groundwater resources for sustainable use.
“This project will certainly make improvements to the livelihoods in the community, as in the past, water was fetched from nearby creeks, which was not safe for consuming and I would like to urge residents to utilize the resources made available, wisely,” Honourable Minister said.
