The Permanent Secretary for Lands and Mineral Resources, Mr. Josefa Caniogo opened the Fiji Land Bank Landowners Trustees Workshop at the Warwick Resort in Sigatoka on the 24th of April, 2019.
More than 30 landowners were present at the opening of the 3 day workshop.
In his opening address, Mr. Caniogo informed participants that the Ministry has published landowners Bio Data Profile handbooks for all designated land leases. The handbook contains information on all processes/procedures undertaken when customary land parcels are designated.
The workshop is part of the Ministry’s empowerment tool to land owning units to promote transparency, encourage landowner’s participation and knowledge sharing.
“Our main priority now is to ensure that land use administration is enhanced through Land Bank Investment and the development of iTaukei land”
With its limited legislative role in the ‘administration of customary land for the benefit of the iTaukei landowners’, this however has become its key drive to the Division’s operations where it ensures enhancement of its land information system, empowerment of lessees’ where their best interest are being served.
Through the Land Bank Reform, the Government has secured and designated 107 parcels of idle and unutilized native land, comprising a total area of 10,529.8945 hectares. Most significantly, a total of $9.4m (approx.) revenue was collected from the lease monies with 64 leases were issued from the 78 parcels of customary land that had been surveyed by the Land Use Division.
Mr. Caniogo thanked the landowners present at the workshop for their continued confidence in allowing the Ministry of Lands through the Land Use Division to administer their land on their behalf.
