The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Honourable Ashneel Sudhakar during his official tour to the Northern Division highlighted that bauxite mining is more sustainable compared to other excavation activities.
Honourable Minister made this comment during his visit to the Nawailevu Bauxite Mining Sites in Bua on 16th September, 2019, to kick off his week-long Northern tour.
Furthermore, the Honourable Minister added that bauxite mining does not damage the environment much, as shafts channels are not dug underground, only about 10 meters of the top soil is removed for mining.
“Excavation works have been completed in both the bauxite mines in Nawailevu, namely the North and South Bauxite Mining Sites.
Aurum Exploration and Mining Services Limited – the company who carried out mining in that area - have been rehabilitating mined areas through pine planting.
