The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Hon. Jone Usamate today (26/06/20) paid out a total of $620,000 to 9 leasing tenants who had been affected by the Nausori Airport Extension Project.
This is the stage 2 of the compensation payment for the affected lessees.
Hon. Minister highlighted that compensation payment for stage 1 of the project payment cost government a total of $663,700 which has benefitted 13 affected leasing tenants and their families.
“More than 40 affected leasing tenants of both State and I-Taukei owned land had willingly given whole or part of their leased properties for this project,” he said.
He added that the Ministry will continue to work in collaboration with the rest of the tenants and other stakeholders like TLTB and Fiji Airports Limited in finalizing Land Acquisition matters for the 3rd and final stage of this project and ensure everyone is fairly compensated for giving their land.
Meanwhile, Nausori Airport Extension was initiated in 2013 for the expansion of the Nausori Runaway and Pavement Infrastructure.
The Hon. Minister said the Nausori Airport Extension Project is worth $60 million, for which the Prime Minister had officiated the ground breaking ceremony in September, 2018.
Furthermore, he added that for the landowning units (Mataqali) who had given their land for leasing towards the current airport site, Government through this initiative has been paying an annual rental of $50,000 over a combined leased area of 32.4161 hectares under a secured TLTB lease of 99 years with effect from 1st July, 2016.
The Hon. Minister also confirmed that some nearby villagers has also been employed by contractors, which has not only built their skills but will also benefit their families, the church and the Vanua.
Additionally, the upgrading and extension of Nausori Airport runway will be felt far beyond the homes and businesses in Nausori once the project is completed. As had mentioned by the Hon Prime Minister, this infrastructure project will forever change the face of Nausori International Airport, improve the surrounding areas and advance its people,” he said.
