Borehole Project Ensures Clean and Safe Drinking Water – Yaro Village.

147 villagers of Yaro in Kia Island are currently benefiting from a successfully completed groundwater drilling and reticulation project.

This is following the Government funded borehole project facilitated through the Mineral Resources Department (MRD). This initiative will guarantee clean, reliable and safe drinking water for 38 households in the area.

Bore Hole Project Yaro Village

The borehole is proven to be of good yield and good quality which can supplement water supply to the village and can be maintained over a number of years if sustainably managed.

The villagers used rain water harvesting system and there are three hand-dug wells that was primarily used for bathing and washing while rainwater was used for other purposes inclusive of cooking and drinking.

However, the hand-dug well was closed off by the Ministry of Health due to the high level contamination of the well.

Furthermore, MRD was engaged in the groundwater drilling operations on the island after receiving a request from the Commissioner Northern’ s office after tropical cyclone Yasa devastated Yaro village.

One of the villagers, Mr. Osea Masiniqa thanked the Government of the day especially the Department for coming to their rescue and providing the village with clean and safe drinking water.
