29 Fijian households and a nursing station in Yaro Village, Kia Island, were grateful to the $130,000 Groundwater Reticulation project that was commissioned by the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Jone Usamate. The 127 villagers agreed that this was the best Christmas gift they had ever received.
Previously, three boreholes were drilled in 2001 and one in 2004. All these bores had been decommissioned because it had been inappropriately used. This lead to the damage of the PVC casings and also had severely contaminated the borehole.
Minister Usamate applauded the villagers of Yaro for their patience and tolerance. “Your wait is over,” he said. “Now the people of Yaro Village will now be able to enjoy a better quality of life as water plays a critical role in their daily lives; from drinking, bathing, washing and cleaning,” said Mr Usamate.
