Tengy Mines PTE Limited is the locally registered and based Chinese company in Fiji that has applied for a prospecting license in the area.
Tengy Mine’s intention is to further explore these prospects (Qalau and Tabuka).
The demarcation of land that holds cultural and traditional significance is not undertaken by the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources.
But the Ministry consults with other relevant agencies as per due process for assessment of mineral exploration license applications.
The Ministry has also worked with the Fiji Museum as part of wider consultations on exploration license application.
Furthermore, not all exploration activity leads to mining. Mineral ownership remains vested in the State and it is in the State or Government’s interest to determine mineral prospectively of the country through the facilitation of mineral exploration work.
Finally, prospecting and mining has been ongoing in Fiji Islands for over 80 years and there has never been any case where exploration was permitted over archeological sites that are connected with Fiji’s history.
The Department will continue to work with relevant agencies to ensure preservation of such areas.
The map clearly shows the targeted area for exploration (CX867) with the Range towards the Southern end of the map and excluded from the proposed exploration area.
